On the 14 Feb 2019 (Valentine’s day — how exciting is my love life) I visited United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) Innovation Hub in Munich, Germany. Alongside other Google Launchpad Mentors, we assisted 10 startups going through the WFP’s accelerator programme to get them investment pitch ready.
To give you some context, the UN has a branch called the World Food Programme (sort of like the World Health Organisation, which you may have heard of) that helps countries ensure that everyone has enough to eat. They also run proactive campaigns to help farmers increase productivity, and find ways to minimise disruption during environmental disasters such as droughts.
Unlike other UN branches such as the WHO, they’re entirely donation funded, meaning the UN doesn’t fund them, so all money comes from states, corporations and individuals. As with a lot of organisations (both private and NGOs) they have an innovation unit to try and constantly improve. Although the WFP’s HQ is in Rome, its innovation hub is in Munich.
